New York Woman Faces Homophobic Attacks at Sizzler

Liza Friedllander SIZZLER (FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM
A New Yorker is filing a lawsuit alleging she was shoved to the ground and subjected to homophobic remarks by a Sizzler manager at one of the chain's restaurants in Forest Hills, Queens.

The manager accused Liza Friedlander of not pre-paying her buffet bill when she attended brunch with friends last September. The suit, filed on Friedlander's behalf by gay rights group
Lambda Legal, claims that the manager shoved her in the chest, kicked her legs, and called her a "fucking dyke" and other epithets.

Other patrons joined in, calling her a "he-she freak" and demanded that she leave the restaurant. Another man threatened to take her outside and rape her, then started throwing objects at her. Eventually, police came, and Friedlander was taken to a nearby hospital.

"Just because I don’t appear to be the Sizzler manager’s idea of what a woman should look like doesn’t mean that gives him permission to attack me and allow other customers to join in," Friedlander said in a statement. "My friends and I went in for Saturday brunch just like everyone else in the restaurant that morning, but it turned into a nightmare. No one should have to go through that."

According to Lambda Legal, this will be the first case to test a bias crime law passed in August 2010 that allows individuals to be sued in civil court for anti-LGBT violence and intimidation.

"Kill the Gays" Bill Is Back and Moving Faster Than Before

MP UGANDA OTTO ODONGA X390 (SOURCED) | ADVOCATE.COMOtto Odonga
The on-again, off-againplan to kill the gays in Uganda is back once more. And this time proponents are moving more quickly to ensure they don't run out of time to vote.

Uganda expert Warren Throckmorton
reports that Otto Odonga, a member of parliament, expects the Anti-Homosexuality Bill could return by the end of August. Odonga is known for once having said he'd kill his son if he were gay.

The Eighth Parliament's session expired earlier this year without a vote on the bill, but the legislation is on a faster track in the Ninth Parliament. Odonga said the bill is “back from the perspective of the new parliament starting from where the last parliament ended.”

The bill's language had seemed to change many times before it failed to come up for a vote. But a provision that included the death penalty as punishment for an evolving list of "crimes" seems to
still be on the table, Throckmorton reports.

Transgender Housekeeper Fired After Background Check

TRANSGENDER EMPLOYMENT X390 (GETTY IMAGES) | ADVOCATE.COM
A housekeeper filed a lawsuit Thursday claiming that a couple who once employed her abruptly fired her when they discovered that she is transgender,Reuters reports.

When Anastacia St. Claire-Hannah officially started working at the Park Avenue apartment on March 9 after a two-week trial period, Carline Dean indicated that she was "very impressed" with the housekeeper's work. However, after the couple found out her transgender status through a background check, Thompson Dean started calling the housekeeper "disgusting" and "a freak." The couple allegedly barred her from preparing their meals, and told her that she need a psychologist. Three days later, St. Claire-Hannah was fired because they said it would look bad for Thompson Dean's image and business.

St. Claire-Hannah has several years of housekeeping and chef experience, according to her attorney, David Fish. The suit was filed in the New York state supreme court.

Miley Cyrus flashes new tattoo supporting gay rights!!!

Miley Cyrus gets a tattoo to support gay marriage equality
Miley Cyrus has added a seventh tattoo, this time choosing an equal sign to symbolize her support for gay rights.
"ALL LOVE is equal," Cyrus said Friday via Twitter, including a picture of the new ink, above right.
But not all who love Miley were treated equally by one another in the wake of Cyrus' reply to a follower who disagreed: "Where does it say in the bible to judge others? Oh right. It doesn't. GOD is the only judge honey," said the 18-year-old actress and singer, who has previously tweeted in favor of gay-marriage rights..
The follower, @MileyCyrusLuver, explained the objection by citing another Bible verse, then expressed surprise about another important matter: "1 Corinthians 6:9-11 explains why I don't support it. And omg I can't believe you replied to me!!"
But Cyrus' reply had the unfortunate side effect of sparking a fan-on-fan Twitter brawl. Cyrus tried to call off the hounds, saying: "Dude everyone lay off @MileyCyrusLuver Love u! Everyone is entitled 2 opinions! 'if u don't stand 4 something you'll fall for anything.' :)"
Still, on Sunday @MileyCyrusLuver was still fielding attack tweets, even after saying Saturday, "For the record!! @MileyCyrus DIDN'T make me cry. She was just replying back. Don't blame her. What made me cry was the death threats."
Gotta love it -- and by "love it," we mean "hate it" -- when an expression of tolerance gives birth to multiple expressions of intolerance toward those who disagree.
Getting back to the tattoo and the photo, don't be offended by Miley's choice of finger: Look again and you'll see that's the put-a-ring-on-it digit, not the put-a-sock-in-it one (albeit on her right hand, not the left).
The Ministry gives full permission, however, to be offended by the manicure.

LADY GAGA A MINISTER??? Gaga Goes Ordained Minister to Officiate Her Yoga Instructor's Lesbian Wedding

Now that same-sex marriage is legal in New York State, many of us—okay, a select few of us (me)—have one question to ask: Who, exactly, do we have to sleep with around here so as to secure Lady Gaga as officiant at our gay weddings?
Look closely pious disciples: The answer will rise from seraphic beads of sweat left on what’s probably the only couture Thierry Mugler yoga mat in New York City.
When radio host JoJo Wright asked Gaga if she would consider turning ordained minister just to marry some of her friends, she had this to say:
“I'm actually going to. My yoga instructor Tricia [Donegan] is a lesbian and she lives with her partner for years now, and they have a beautiful daughter. And [they] asked me to marry them.”
Mantra of the day: Pray to the Lotus feet of the Supreme Guru who teaches the good knowledge. Even better, chant "wed under the law by Lady Gaga” five times a day.

Tim Gunn: Hillary Clinton Fashion Shows Gender Confusion

TIM GUNN SCREEN GRAB X390 | ADVOCATE.COM
Celebrity style expert Tim Gunn appeared on Lopez Tonight and issued a judgment against the “unflattering” pantsuits that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton wears, saying, “I think she’s confused about her gender.”
“Why must she dress that way? I think she’s confused about her gender,” said the Project Runway star, in a comment that caused audible discomfort among some Lopez Tonightaudience members. “All these big, baggy menswear-tailored pantsuits. No, I’m really serious. She wears pantsuits that are really unflattering.”
Host George Lopez introduced the topic and encouraged the criticism of Clinton by asking at one point how any tailoring could hide “cankles.” He compared a recent “floral outfit” worn by Clinton to his memories of No Bugs M’Lady, a type of insecticidal shelf liner used by his grandmother.
Gunn commended the former first lady and U.S. senator from New York briefly for “her intellect and her tenacity” and service to country before adding, “I just wish she could send a stronger message about American fashion.”
The comments played poorly among feminists and transgender advocates, who saw the words as evidence of the double standard faced by women in public life and an oversimplified understanding of gender.
Jezebel excoriated Gunn for his remarks about Clinton’s “Jersey Shore style” and questioned why fashion should be part of her job description. Feministing said the comments illustrated the predicament of women who run for office, whether the candidate is Clinton, Sarah Palin, or Michele Bachmann.
“Spend too much money and energy making sure you conform to the strict beauty standards of being a ‘woman’ in this culture and you’ll risk not being taken seriously as a ‘politician.’ But spend too little and you’ll end up having your identity as a ‘woman’ questioned,” wrote a contributor to the blog. “In either case, your appearance will be scrutinized in a way that would be totally unthinkable for a male politician.”

NAACP's Historic Gay Rights Discussion

NAACP SYKES BOND LEMON X390 | ADVOCATE.COM

Comedian Wanda Sykes and CNN anchor Don Lemon were among the panelists on the NAACP's first forum to discuss LGBT issues at i's 102nd annual national convention.

Leaders of the national civil rights organization, including President Benjamin Todd Jealous and Chairman Emeritus Julian Bond, have expressed their own concerns over homophobia among African-Americans, and in recent years the NAACP has sponsored some localized events to address homophobia.

Jealous opened Monday's discussion with the organization's three-pronged mission to increase acceptance of black LGBT people among African-Americans, including strengthening the NAACP's knowledge of LGBT issues and policies, building alliances with LGBT organizations, and advancing awareness of LGBT issues "as they relate to overarching programs and interest of the NAACP," PeoplesWorld.org reports.

Sykes, who publicly came out after Proposition 8 passed in California, said that a key part of building support for gay rights among African-Americans is getting churches on board. She said that she felt pressured to stay closeted because of church sermons that vilified homosexuality.

"You just suppress everything and become this other person," she said. "You start living that life that you think that you're supposed to do. I worked it so hard I got married! It just hit me, like, wait a minute. Why aren't my relationships going further? Why can't I really open up? And I realized oh, that's right. I forgot; I'm a lesbian! That's what it is. You don't have breasts!"

While the event was intended to be an all-encompassing discussion on LGBT issues, the panel had no transgender or bisexual representatives. Activist Ashley Love told Free Speech TV that organizers could have done more to be inclusive.

"The NAACP was founded because black people were being excluded from having a seat at the table," she said. "So why would we as an LGBT black coalition exclude transsexual and transgender people, who are the most vulnerable, the most marginalized, the most endangered in the entire coalition?"

Lemon moderated the panel, which consisted of Sykes, Bond, activist Kenyon Farrow, Spelman College professor Beverly Guy-Sheftall, and actor Darryl Stephens.

Miami's Catholic Leaders Accused of Underground Gay Sex Mafia

John Favalora X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COMArchbishop Emeritus John C. Favalora
One of Florida's most powerful Catholic leaders is being accused of running the Miami Archdiocese like a gay sexual mafia boss.
Gawker reports that a group of Catholics from South Florida calling their organization Christifidelis had launched a major investigation into the activities of Archbishop Emeritus John C. Favalora. In a report from Christifidelis called "Miami Vice," the group found that Favalora was part owner of a company that manufactured an aphrodisiac drink and took trips to Key West with "gay associates."

He also reportedly had sexual relationships with several underlings, including at least two monsignors, a rector, and a former student. The report indicated that many other priests in South Florida are gay and have live-in boyfriends. Some engaged in pedophilia.
Favalora resigned eight months before his 75th birthday, when archbishops routinely retire. Soon after, new archbishop Thomas Wenski was supposedly brought in to "clean up Favalora's mess," a source told Gawker. Many of the 35 priests named in the report had either retired or been reassigned.

Israelis take part in Jerusalem's annual gay pride parade!!!

Despite a convoy of disruptive donkeys and an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man throwing bags of foul-smelling liquid at marchers, a gay pride celebration in Jerusalem largely looks like the many to have come before it internationally.

While 3,000 people participated this year, about 1,000 police were on hand keeping order. There was reason to worry, since ultra-Orthodox Jews had stabbed three participants in 2005, the AFP recalls in its coverage of the bag-throwing man.

Away from the pride celebration, a group of right-wing protesters attempted to interrupt the festivities with a donkey convoy (it was hatefully symbolic) but were stopped by police outside the city limits. With all that could have gone wrong, these pictures of serene celebrants kissing and mingling are perhaps truly something to take pride in. — Lucas Grindley
