English soul and R&B singer Joss Stone says Lady Gaga’s look distracts from her talent, according to the New York Post. Stone reportedly told online interviewer Chris Yandek, “I know the shock value is good and gets people to watch you, but actually [Gaga] can sing songs and she can play piano, and it just feels like [her look] might overshadow what talent she does have.”
Stone, who has sold over 10 million albums and is one of the best-selling British musicians of the last decade, has a new band, SuperHeavy, with Mick Jagger, the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, Indian musician A.R. Rahman, and Bob Marley’s son Damian. Their much-anticipated, self-titled album is out in September.
But don’t expect any meat dresses or mermaid costumes on Stone. She thinks singers like Gaga are strong enough for their music to stand alone. According to the Post, Stone says Madonna’s inventive costumes and outlandish showmanship may have unnecessarily influenced girls of Gaga’s generation.
“Not the best singer in the world, but she was awesome with ... her shock tactics,” says Stone. “She inspired all sorts of other girls to do that.”
